D-Day commemorations in Caen, France!
Remembering, Reflecting, Connecting
Students from the Salterns Academy Trust proudly represented Portsmouth at the D-Day commemorations in Caen, France from 5 to 6 June 2026.
In a moving ceremony attended by veterans, dignitaries and international guests, our students honoured those who served in the Second World War while strengthening the historic bond between Portsmouth and its twin city, Caen.
From powerful performances of God Save the King and La Marseillaise to the moving hymn O Valiant Heart, our students demonstrated exceptional professionalism, respect and musical excellence throughout.
A particularly poignant moment saw a bilingual recitation of Pourquoi in French and English, bringing together students from both nations in a shared act of remembrance and unity.
Beyond the ceremony, students had the honour of meeting the Lord Mayor of Portsmouth and the Mayor of Caen, celebrating the importance of international friendship, cultural exchange and remembrance.
This unforgettable experience highlighted the power of language learning, collaboration and global citizenship, leaving a lasting impact on everyone involved.
