Year 8 Camp Information
As part of our broad curriculum offer we take every Year 8 student away for 2 nights camping at Brockenhurst in the New Forest. Year 8 Camp has become an integral part of a student’s education at Admiral Lord Nelson School and this year will be our 24th year of camp. Year 8 camp is always something students bring up as one of their fondest memories of school. The aim of the camp is to help the students develop teamwork, social and initiative skills through a programme of fun and challenging activities.
Research into outdoor education has shown that it helps to develop young people in:
• Participating in outdoor activities and adopting a positive attitude to challenge and adventure
• Gaining personal confidence and self-esteem through taking on challenges and achieving success
• Developing their self-awareness and social skills
• Demonstrating increased initiative, self-reliance, responsibility, perseverance and commitment
• Developing and extending their skills of communication, problem solving, leadership and teamwork
• Displaying an increased motivation and appetite for learning, contributing to raised levels of attainment
We understand that for some students going on camp is outside of their comfort zone as they may not have been camping before or they may not have been away from parents before overnight. However, the Year 8 Camp experience is, and has always been a central part of the school’s curriculum offer and as a result we expect all students to attend.
