Literacy Toolbox

At ALNS we strive to develop confident users of language who develop communication skills across subjects and different contexts. The following principle underpins our literacy practice:

As a school we:

  • Model high-levels of literacy in our own speech and written word, using language and subject-specific language precisely
  • Know students’ KS2 English levels and carry out NGRT standardised testing, which informs planning decisions on a strategic level
  • Practise 'Let's Read' class reading in every KS3 lesson, promoting reading for pleasure with a range of varied, high quality, engaging texts
  • Use MS teams to track KS3 progress and build confidence over time
  • Read texts aloud in lessons, model reading and checking student understanding
  • Share key vocabulary and definitions orally at the beginning, during and at the end of units of work
  • Give students time to discuss ideas and develop responses
  • Use ABC to encourage exploratory talk
  • Develop students’ learning orally through targeted questioning
  • Read, share and deconstruct examples of text types prior to writing
  • Allow students to have access to the success criteria of a piece of writing
  • Use the literacy marking code to identify spelling and punctuation errors, allowing students time to self-correct.

Access to School Library

The Library is open from 8.20am daily until 8.45am, then at break times and after school until 4pm. The titles on offer are being constantly updated via our contract with the School Library Service. If we don't have a title that you want, we can order it in.
